Meet Cohen
- Baby Saves
“My previous pregnancy was preterm, so I was considered high-risk. I wanted to do everything I could to make sure this baby was OK. Around the time I was supposed to start counting kicks, my OB-GYN recommended the Count the Kicks app to help me track my baby’s movements and patterns.
Every night before bed, I would count his kicks. Around 34 weeks, something felt off. He was still moving, but it didn’t feel like his normal movements. That night, my kick count took longer than usual. It worried me, but since he was still moving, I tried to brush it off and went to sleep.
The next morning, I counted again, and it was the same. I decided it was better to be safe than sorry and went to Labor and Delivery to get checked.
At first, everything looked fine. But because of my history, they checked for dilation — and I was in preterm labor.
I was admitted for monitoring. While I was there, I started having contractions I couldn’t even feel. During those contractions, my baby’s heart rate would drop dangerously low. The first time, they were able to recover it. The second time, they couldn’t.
Everything happened so fast. Suddenly there was a sense of urgency, with people moving quickly around me, and I was rushed into surgery. Before I could even process what was happening, I was put under anesthesia.
Cohen was born on Sept. 9, 2025. He spent six days in the NICU, but thankfully had no complications and was breathing on his own.
We are so incredibly fortunate.
If I hadn’t been using the Count the Kicks app and paying attention to his movements, I don’t know what would have happened.
My advice to every mom: trust your gut.
I felt like I might be overreacting. I was even a little embarrassed for being so worried.
But I had my baby that same day.
It is never worth waiting it out.
If something feels off — get checked. That’s what they’re there for.” – Kiya C., Cohen’s mom.
