Hi! I’m Keshia Jenkins, but around the community, most people know me simply as Kay. I greet you from the sunny state of Florida, where I currently live in the capital city of Tallahassee. Whether I’m at the Capitol speaking up for mothers and babies, or walking alongside families as they navigate our complex maternal health system, I always show up with one goal in mind: to serve with peace, light, and love.
My journey began back in high school, when I stepped into my very first classroom and discovered a deep, natural connection with young children. That spark quickly grew into a lifelong passion. Now, with nearly 25 years of experience, I’ve poured my heart into early childhood education and maternal health — because I believe that a mother’s well-being is the foundation for her child’s future.
In 2019, I founded Brain Building Consulting to support educators and caregivers in creating nurturing, brain-friendly environments for young learners. Just two years later, I blended my passion for early learning and love for the mothers I am serving and launched MamaKay Birthing Services, where I provide doula care, childbirth education, and family support through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. A friend eloquently described my work the following way: “I work with families from conception and then with their children during the most important years of their life.”
Throughout the years, I’ve worked across Florida, regionally and nationally, using my voice, hands, and heart to uplift communities. I’ve been blessed to earn degrees from Tallahassee Community College, Saint Leo University, and the University of North Florida. I continue to deepen my learning and impact through a variety of credentials and certifications, including:
- Full Spectrum Doula (BADT, DTI, SBJN)
- Community Birth Doula (BEAM & G.R.O.W)
- Certified Childbirth Educator (ICEA)
- Child Passenger Safety Technician
- ACTT Facilitator
- Infant Mental Health Endorsement (FAIMH)
My learning is rooted in my desire to meet families where they are and help them thrive. I’m also proud to serve as a Count the Kicks Ambassador — a role that’s deeply personal to me.
“Lack of knowledge should never be the reason someone loses their baby.”
As a young black mother I utilized many of the services I work alongside and I continue to live in the very community I serve. I’ve seen the impact that education and access (or the lack of it) can have on my communities and people who look like myself. My mission as an ambassador is to raise awareness, empower families, and help reduce preventable fetal and infant deaths in our most vulnerable communities.
At the heart of it all are my four beautiful children — my “A-Team” — who continue to inspire my work every single day. Their love fuels my purpose, and their presence reminds me of what’s at stake.
I believe in showing up fully, following your purpose, and letting your heart lead. So, wherever you see me — whether I’m leading a training, standing at a podium, or comforting a new parent — you’ll find me living by my motto: “Peace, Light, and Love.”
