Meet Fernando
- Baby Saves
“I learned about Count the Kicks from my doula. When I was 36 weeks pregnant I started to not feel well. I was experiencing severe congestion with a cough, and I noticed a decrease in my baby’s movements. The only movement that I felt that day was hiccups, which I knew were involuntary.
I went immediately to the hospital to be monitored. When I arrived at the hospital they did an ultrasound and a non-stress test (NST). I had to inform the technician that hiccups are involuntary movement. Once monitoring started, it was determined fairly quickly that my baby was in danger. I also tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
Although I was only 36 weeks, the doctors decided an emergency cesarean section was necessary to save my baby. Baby boy Fernando was delivered four weeks early and weighed 4 pounds 15 ounces. Fernando was severely anemic and was given two blood transfusions. The doctors think that due to me being sick that the placenta started sending healing cells from the placenta to me, which took them away from baby Fernando.” -Fernando’s mom
