“Throughout pregnancy I tried out a bunch of different apps after 28 weeks. It was my first pregnancy, so I wanted to make sure to stay on top of it. Hudson was always super active all day long. I was told if he moves a certain amount of times you are good, but it always felt weird because his movements are different throughout the day.

I first learned about the Count the Kicks app on TikTok. I had already gone in once for reduced movement and had an anterior placenta. I really liked that I could rate the kick strength with Count the Kicks. This feature is one of the reasons I went into the hospital for reduced movement when I was 38 weeks along.

On the evening of June 29, I noticed that I was reaching my regular kick counts, but that the kicks were not as strong as what I was used to. I felt uneasy all day. Since I had been tracking my kick strength on the app, I felt that I should call my midwife and go get checked out. I felt really bad and that I might be wasting people’s time, and I questioned it on the way to the hospital.

About 5 minutes after getting hooked up to the monitors at the hospital his heart rate dropped from 130-140 to around 99. It went from a calm, quick check to calling on-call doctors and midwives. They were not sure why his heart rate dropped, but because I was full term they wanted to avoid any risks and decided to induce me.

Being able to track the strength of the kicks is what prompted me to go in. My advice to other mothers would be to trust your instincts and if you feel like something is off, call your provider and go in to get checked out! The doctors and nurses are always so happy to see you and want to get a check on your baby because anything can be going on.

Even if you are meeting the kick counts like I was, the strength of the kick matters too! They did not determine why Hudson was in distress, and I am not sure what the outcome would have been if I had not gone in when I did. But I am so thankful I had the Count the Kicks app to help track kick frequency and strength!” -Gabby M., Hudson’s mom
