“I heard about Count the Kicks from Nurses for Newborns. I started kick counting as soon as I could feel his movement.

I would use the app regularly to keep track of his movements patterns and at around 39 weeks I noticed he wasn’t moving like he normally would. I knew I needed to keep an eye on it and went to bed. The next day I still was not feeling him move and tried drinking a sugary drink and it did not change.*

I went in and got checked and they hooked me up to the monitor and noticed his heart rate was not moving like it should. They told me they were looking for large dips, but they were very short. My OB-GYN told me very calmly that they would need to do an emergency cesarean section because she did not believe he would do well in labor. It seemed like there was more going on than it seemed.

Maxwell was born on Oct. 16 and he came out not making any noise. He was taken to the NICU where he stayed for six days. They doctors were not really sure what happened but did mention his umbilical cord was very thin and could have resulted in him not getting everything he needed. He is back home now healthy and doing great.

My advice to expectant parents is to use the Count the Kicks app to learn when your baby is most active and to learn their patterns. If I did not know what was normal I wouldn’t have thought to go in.” -Devon L., Maxwell’s Mom

*Editor’s Note: Research shows that fetal movement is best monitored without interventions like juice, candy, or drinking ice water.
