Maternal Health Connection
The health of a mom and the health of her baby are intrinsically connected. The CDC lists a change in baby’s movements as one of its 15 urgent maternal warning signs.
Statistics
1- 669
In 2023 there were 669 maternal deaths in the U.S. The CDC estimates 80% of maternal deaths are preventable.
2- 15%
According to one study, more than 15% of maternal deaths within 42 days of delivery occur in women who experienced a stillbirth.
3- 4X
Research shows that the risk of severe maternal morbidity is more than four times higher among stillbirth deliveries compared with live births.
Research shows that a change in a baby's movement can be the earliest and sometimes only sign there may be an issue in the pregnancy. By increasing education and awareness around movement monitoring we can work together to improve birth outcomes not just for babies, but for moms too.
Stillbirth in the U.S. Report
Research shows that women who experience stillbirth have significantly higher risks of severe maternal morbidity and mortality compared to women who experience live births. “The Link Between Stillbirth & Maternal Mortality and Morbidity” report includes firsthand accounts from women who say that speaking up about a change in their baby’s movement not only helped their baby to have a safe arrival, but also identified and addressed pregnancy complications that put their own life at risk, too.
